CVP218: Integrated Water Resource Management
Department: WEDC
Water is essential for human life, for the economy and for the environment. It has cultural, social and religious significance. It is becoming under greater pressure from pollution, from the changing climate and ever increasing demands from a growing population, leading to water scarcity and conflict.
This module (which can be studied either in Loughborough or by distance learning), takes an integrated approach to the management of water resources, with a focus on the needs and the constraints of low- and middle-income countries. This approach balances an introduction to hydrology with management issues such as water rights, laws and policies.
It combines practical aspects such as measuring and assessing the flow in rivers with wider perspectives such as an examination of water’s role in sustainable human livelihoods. Specific topics include overviews of irrigation and urban drainage alongside ongoing discussions about the use of the river basin as a management unit.
The module shows how socio-economic tools can be used alongside physical interventions to ensure equitable and environmentally sound allocations of water.
