On 16/March/2010 at 6.00pm - 7.00pm. Which Way for Physics? Since the time of Newton, the general assumption among physicists has been that nature is governed by fundamental laws of a mathematical character. However, in recent years this assumption has become beset by uncertainties. Professor Brian Josephson, will describe an alternative perspective, according to which nature is fundamentally alive rather than mechanical or mathematical. Professor Brian Josephson, won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1973. He is currently head of the Mind - Matter Unification Project in the Theory of Condensed Matter research group at the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge. This prestigious fifteenth Sir Nevill Mott Lecture will be hosted by the Department of Physics. All welcome, although an understanding of physics principles up to 'A' level physics is recommended.

On 24/March/2010 at 5.00pm. Improving Operations Management via Operational Research Operations is an essential function for any manufacturing or service organization. Operations management is concerned with the planning and effective use of the organization's resources to operate the manufacturing or service system. While general management philosophies provide principles and guidelines for managing the system operations, operational research can help analyzing the actual operations and offering improved solutions to operations management problems. In this lecture, Jiyin will demonstrate through examples the application of operational research techniques in solving various operations management problems in manufacturing and transportation logistics systems. These include a capacity planning problem for airport ramp services, a quay crane allocation problem at container terminals, and a lot streaming problem in production.

On 21/April/2010 at 5.00pm. Bustin' in on My Dreams - Making Me see Things I Don't Wanna See The title of this lecture is taken from Fleetwood Mac's 'The Green Manalishi' and aptly describes the challenges in translating to reality Professor Gale's research dreams; together with his fascination with encouraging people to see things they often fail to see. Such failures arise partly because our visual system is designed to process only selected parts of the world around us and then our brain fills in details. This process, whilst very efficient, can sometimes lead to serious errors. Understanding why such visuo-cognitive errors arise and how to minimise them so as to improve human performance in different situations is vitally important. This will be illustrated in this wide ranging lecture which embraces very diverse domains of: breast, cervical and colon cancer screening; homeland security; gun crime detection; driver support systems; medication errors; art appreciation; and assistive technology. Alastair provides a journey across his imagination demonstrating how his research passions lead to real world innovation.
