Inaugural lectures

Professor Weeratunge Malalasekera

Wednesday 25th May, 2011 at 5pm - Lecture Theatre T.0.03, Wolfson Building

How can Combustion and Radiation Modelling help Our Changing Planet?

Professor Weeratunge Malalasekera, School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

Advancement in the design and operation of combustion devices used in automobile, air transport and power generation industries is very important for the reduction of emissions contributing to global warming.

Such advances depend upon making combustion equipment operate at higher efficiencies so that more power can be extracted for the same amount of fuel burnt. This will, in the long run, reduce emissions or maintain at the present levels while meeting the present and future demand for power and energy.

In this lecture Professor Malalasekera will explain the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to the modelling of combustion related problems and its role in helping to reduce emissions and other undesirable consequences such as combustion related accidents.

Interesting examples drawn from industrial and safety related combustion situations are discussed. Radiation modelling, the role of environmental radiation and the effects of emissions on the environment will also be discussed.
