Google Applications
Google Apps for Alumni
The University has been working with Google since the start of the year to develop a system that will let undergraduate and taught course postgraduate students keep their Google Apps account when their course finishes. This means that you will still have access to your e-mail, contacts, and documents on the Google system after you have left the University.
How Does it Work?
Your alumni e-mail address is available for you to use right now, as an alias for your student address. When your student registration with the University lapses we will automatically convert your Google Apps account into an alumni account. We will also forward e-mail which is sent to the old address for at least six months.
Please note that the way you log in to read your alumni e-mail is slightly different to the normal student e-mail. We will let you know when your account has been converted into an alumni account.
Alumni Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do I reconfigure my iPad, Outlook and other applications?
-
I'm a research student / staff member - does this apply to me?
-
What is my alumni e-mail address?
Your alumni e-mail address is the same as your Loughborough student e-mail address, but with student changed to alumni. For example, if your student e-mail address was F.J.Bloggs-08@student.lboro.ac.uk, then your alumni e-mail address would be F.J.Bloggs-08@alumni.lboro.ac.uk.
-
What about the short form of my e-mail address?
Unfortunately, we can't forward this to your alumni address because it is based on your University user name and this may be re-used and given to someone new after you are de-registered from our systems. We guarantee to forward mail to the full form of your student e-mail address, i.e. F.J.Bloggs-08@student.lboro.ac.uk.
-
I'm on industrial placement, how does this affect me?
While on industrial placement you are still formally registered as a student and should be able to use the normal student Google system as before. Transition to alumni status will normally only occur when you finish your course and leave the University.
-
Go directly to the Google Apps Alumni Service at http://start.alumni.lboro.ac.uk.
Now log in with your Alumni e-mail address and your old University password, e.g. F.J.Bloggs-08@alumni.lboro.ac.uk, as detailed below:

For more information on using Google Apps at Loughborough is available from the Frequently Asked Questions section.
-
The initial alumni service covers the various services hosted on Google Apps, e.g. e-mail, calendar, contacts and documents. Please note that you have 1GB of general purpose storage via Google Docs. This may be a useful place to store files that you have been working as a student.
-
Please note that, in particular, the alumni service does not provide: access to Learn, your "U:" drive or University Library services. Your access to these facilities will be withdrawn shortly after graduation.
-
How do I reconfigure my iPad, Outlook and other applications?
If you have been using a dedicated e-mail client program such as Mac Mail, Outlook, or Thunderbird, you will need to update your account settings to use your new alumni e-mail address. For example if your student e-mail address was F.J.Bloggs-08@student.lboro.ac.uk, then your alumni e-mail address would be F.J.Bloggs-08@alumni.lboro.ac.uk. Your alumni account will still be accessible via your Web browser in the meantime.
-
Can I just forward my alumni e-mail somewhere else?
Yes - from your alumni e-mail, select Settings then Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

Enter the address that you would like your alumni e-mail forwarding to.

Google will send a verification e-mail to your forwarding address that you are required to confirm before you can begin forwarding your alumni e-mail.
-
How do I change my Google Alumni password?
To change your password, please go to our alumni password changing page and enter your alumni e-mail address.
-
What happens with websites, shared documents etc?
Websites that you have created using Google Sites with your original student account will still be accessible via their original URLs, but you will be prompted to sign in to the student Google system to update them - use your alumni e-mail address for this. Documents that you have shared with people will still be accessible to them after your alumni transition.
-
What if I graduated before 2010?
Please visit the alumni website to be added to the system. You will need your Loughborough student ID number for verification purposes. On activation of your account you will have access to the full range of Google Apps services provided to students.
-
I am a research student / staff member - does this apply to me?
At present we are unable to automatically create you an alumni account that will preserve your existing e-mail, contacts, documents etc. We are able to do this for undergraduates and taught course postgraduates due to recent enhancements made by Google to the Google Apps system. If you would still like to register for an alumni account please contact the Alumni Association.
-
What if I come back to study at Loughborough University?
We will try to convert your alumni account back into a full student account automatically, but this is not guaranteed to work in all cases. If you find that you have been given a new student account please contact IT.Services@lboro.ac.uk for assistance.
-
It doesn't work! What should I do?
If you are having problems getting to the Google Apps for Alumni start page, please try going directly to your alumni e-mail by following this link: https://mail.google.com/a/alumni.lboro.ac.uk.
