Welcome to the Counselling and Disability Service

The Counselling and Disability Service (CDS) provides a range of support, advice and guidance for students. Our services are open to any student across the University and we work in a way which helps you build on your strengths and achieve your potential on your course. Below is some brief information about the different services we provide. Click on the links to find out more.

Disability Support

The Disability Office can offer a range of advice, support and guidance to disabled students, including the following:

  • Working with academic departments to ensure that students are appropriately supported;
  • Recommending appropriate assessment arrangements;
  • Supporting students in applying for the Disabled Students Allowance;
  • Providing one-to-one support specific to students' needs, including support via the Study Support Service, the Mental Health Support Team and the Note-taking Service;
  • We can provide screening for dyslexia and a full assessment by an Educational Psychologist if appropriate;
  • Working with accommodation services to make sure that your accommodation needs are met.

Mental Health Support

The Mental Health Support Team is here to support students experiencing mental health difficulties, provide advice and information on mental health issues, and advise staff about appropriate practical or pastoral support.

If you are a student of the University who is facing barriers that affect your ability to study - due to emotional burden or mental health difficulties - then the Mental Health Support Team may be able to help.

Dyslexia Support

We can support dyslexic students in a number of ways while at university: 

  • Lecture materials can be provided in advance by your department where possible via Learn
  • We can arrange a note-taker in lectures for you if this has been recommended as part of your DSA award;
  • In agreement with your department you can record lectures where appropriate;
  • Each department or School has a Disability Co-ordinator who can provide advice to dyslexic students;
  • We can provide extra time and other arrangements in exams;
  • We can provide extended library loans;
  • We can provide one-to-one support sessions with a specialist tutor as part of your DSA Award

Counselling

The University Counselling Service is available to all students and offers an opportunity to talk and reflect with a professionally trained person who is outside your immediate situation.

People use counselling for all kinds of different reasons and you don’t need to be in a crisis to come here.  Counselling can’t take away life’s difficulties but can help you to find ways forward, make decisions, gain new perspectives, discover solutions and come to terms with and manage challenging life events.

Assessment Centre

Loughborough Regional Assessment Centre was established in 2001 and is a DSA-QAG accredited DSA assessment centre. Our friendly, professional staff can provide assessments for students with a wide range of disabilities as part of the Disabled Students Allowance process.  The first step is to apply for Disabled Students Allowance. Once you have received approval for assessment please contact us to make arrangements for your assessment.
