Biography
I graduated in 2000 from the BSc Communication and Media Studies in the Department of Social Sciences, following a period of working at Nottingham Trent University I returned to register as a part-time PhD student. My thesis explores the growth and impact of private higher education in the UK.
Between March 2003 and July 2010 I worked as research assistant to Professor Peter Golding. During my time working in the Department of Social Sciences I have also worked as research associate on a variety of research projects; exploring experiences of students in higher and further education institutions; research on UK reporting of EU news as part of the AIM Research Consortium; an analysis of media coverage of the 2004 Olympic games; and more recently completing a report on the literature on women’s experience of the cultures of Science, Engineering and Technology professions. During these research projects I have worked with university colleagues in the Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences, the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, Registry and the International Office. I have also presented papers at international conferences; the International Communications Association (Dresden, 2006), International Sociological Association (Durban, 2006) and European Sociological Association (Antalya, 2006) and national conferences; the British Sociological Association (Cardiff, 2009) and MeCCSA (Bradford, 2009).
I also worked as Assistant Editor for the European Journal of Communication from March 2003 to July 2009, (website: http://ejc.sagepub.com/) and have assisted in the production of the special issue of European Societies journal (Volume 9, Issue 5, 2007) and the edited book, Unpacking Digital Dynamics, by Graham Murdock and Peter Golding (2010) and The Public Sphere, vol. i-iv Jostein Gripsrud, Graham Murdock and Anders Molander (2010).
Between August 2009 and July 2010 I co-chaired the university’s gender research group – Women and Gender Studies (WAGS), renamed Research Agenda. I was involved in securing university funding for the group, which enabled more external speakers to be tenable and produced better promotion for the group’s sessions.
Between July 2009 and September 2011 I was Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Building Engineering on the Helena Project, which explores engineering curriculum in higher education with a particular focus on women in engineering. See webpage for more details; http://www.fp7-helena.org/
I am currently working with colleagues in the Department of Social Sciences on the BBC impartiality review on the coverage of the Arab Spring, research that looks at news archives and coverage of various themes from 1918 onwards and developing research proposals with colleagues in Social Sciences and Civil and Building Engineering.
