Graduated in Mathematics (BSc) and PhD in Engineering Science from Liverpool University. Scientific Officer, United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority 1972-1974. Joined Southampton University as Research Fellow and then Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR). Joined Loughborough University as Professor of Optical Engineering in 1990. Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering 1992-1997. Dean of Engineering from 1997 to 2001, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) 2001 to 2006. Visiting Professor, ISVR Southampton University.
