Opening of new Advanced Friction Materials Laboratory
January 2012

Collaborators from industry, Materials researchers and invited guests attended the formal opening of the Department's new Advanced Friction Materials research laboratory. The team led by Dr Houzheng Wu specialise in the development and testing of Advanced friction materials, including carbon ceramic composites which can offer significant savings in weight and reduce the stopping distance.
Professor Jon Binner wins Verulam Medal

Professor Jon Binner is this year's winner of the Verulam Medal, awarded for distinguished contributions to refractories or other types of ceramic materials. This tops off a very busy year for Jon who has also become Dean of the new school of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering, which came into effect in August 2011.
Materials graduate commissioned into the Royal Engineers

Materials graduate James Eadie was one of 25 Loughborough University graduates taking part in the Sovereign’s Parade, to mark their passing out. James has been commissioned into the Royal Engineers as a second Lieutenant.
Materials cricket team 2011 campaign

Once again the all conquering Materials cricket team took to the field for this years interdepartmental competition. The team who won the competition last year (2010) had high hopes for a repeat performance, but despite some strong performances they were beaten in this year's semi-final by Wolfson, Electrical & Computer science.
Highly successful Materials Research Day 2011

Highlight of the year for Loughborough University Materials Department researchers is the annual Research Day, held this year on Wednesday 20th July. The event showcases all research student projects to the Industrial Companies with whom they associate and those who sponsor their research.
Medal award for excellence in Surface Engineering

Dr Gary Critchlow has been awarded the Canning Bi-Centenary Medal, by the Institute of Metal Finishing, for his paper “Hot and cold cleaning methods: CO2 and Nd:YAG laser ablation, sodium hydride immersion and CO2 cryoblasting”.
Materials Student Wins Graduate School Prize

Yang Liu, who is better known in the department as ‘Troy’, has won the Graduate School Prize, which is awarded to an outstanding student for a mix of both academic and non-academic achievement.
Glory of India Award for Dr. Bala Vaidhyanthan

The India International Friendship Society has selected Dr. Bala Vaidhyanathan of the Department of Materials, Loughborough University, for their most prestigious Glory of India Award & Certificate of Excellence.
