Neil works for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and is currently exploring a number of areas, in particular, the exploration and analysis of networks including specific techniques such as social network analysis. Building on a strong systems engineering expertise, Neil is developing techniques for analysing the relationships between social networks and the wider systems and infrastructures that they populate and, by extension, testing mechanisms for generating effects in both. Of particular importance is the analysis of uncooperative networks where partial or missing data play an important role.
Prior to his current role Neil was the Chief Scientist (Naval Systems) in DSTL, the science and technology organisation that supports the MoD. There was a significant range of systems and technologies involved in this post ranging from underwater to surface to airborne challenges, from complex combat systems issues to the consideration of human factors in highly stressed environments, and more besides.
