Luan's research investigates the application of low-cost, commercial off-the-shelf PC gaming technology to next-generation flight training devices to provide equivalent full-scale simulation system capabilities for deployable pilot training in air combat and UAV operations.
This research is supported by a full Departmental PhD Studentship award under supervision of Prof. dr. Roy Kalawsky.

Thesis: The Effect of Synthetic Vision Enhancements on Landing Flare Performance
The usage of heads-down, non-conformal synthetic vision displays for landings below minimums has inherent problems during the manual flare. I designed an enhanced display with extra support cues and conducted a piloted experiment. A clear learning curve effect was observed when pilots started with the enhanced display, suggesting potential use as a training tool. My thesis report resulted in a paper presented at the AIAA Guidance, Navigation & Control conference 2010.
