Winners at the PhD Conference 2011

This year's PhD Conference was held on Wednesday 25 May in the Sir Denis Rooke Building, Holywell Park.
Starting with a keynote presentation from this year's Chair, Professor Simon Watson, on the research challenges posed by wind energy, a packed programme ensured a lively and fascinating day for everyone. We were delighted to be joined by Professor Mike Withers, Professor Leon Freris and Dr Andrew Armstrong who together kindly acted as our learned, external judging panel - a challenging and difficult task, as they each commented.
Prizes are given for the best paper and presentation, for the best poster and for the best extended abstract. The prize is given for the paper which has research impact and is communicated most clearly in the oral presentation: the winning poster and abstract describe good quality research, presented in a clear and succinct way. This year, for the second time in a row, the best paper came from the Control Systems Research Group. But the standard was very high all round so, to quote an old cliche, everyone's a winner.
