Welcome to the Department of English and Drama

Welcome to the website of the Department of English and Drama at Loughborough University.
The Department of English and Drama is a dynamic and international body, with students not only from across the British Isles, but also Asia, North America and a dozen different countries on the European mainland. With around 500 undergraduate students, more than 70 postgraduate students (MA and Research), and over 30 staff, we are large enough to promote a wide range of activities and interests while still preserving a strong sense of community where formality is kept to a minimum.
At undergraduate level English and Drama can be studied on their own, or together. English can also be studied in various combinations with North American Literature and Film, Sports Science, History, Publishing, or Politics; there is also a Part-Time English BA. These programmes are very highly rated: in the 2007 National Student Survey, Loughborough English came 2nd nationally, and in placing Loughborough Drama 5th in its 2007 survey, the Guardian scored us higher than any other mainstream university.
We supervise research in a wide variety of post-medieval literature, on a wide range of topics in theatre and performance, and in linguistics. In RAE 2001, English and Drama scored 5 for its research, and in RAE 2008 90% of the department's research was assessed as being of international quality.
