During the 3 years of research, students undertake a formal course of research methods training. This standard taught course is attended by all full-time students, (on average 10 days per year). Part-time students may also be required to attend. The modules are designed to provide support and help students in areas such as preparing reports and writing up theses. Students can also take advantage of additional personal and professional development opportunities. The Student Support Centre organises pre-sessional courses before the start of each academic year. There is a four-week English language course, a two-week study skills course and a one-week course to help students settle into the University and town. Students in the Department have access to a wide range of equipment which can be used for research purposes. Resident students have use of a research office with computer facilities, including access to the Internet. The Department also has four computer laboratories which may be used. Good access to research materials in Britain's many world-famous libraries is easily possible from Loughborough. The Pilkington Library is well-stocked and offers research students a prompt and efficient interlibrary loan service. There is also a range of audiovisual equipment. The equipment needs of the Department and the University are constantly being reviewed as part of the IT policy so as to keep facilities up-to-date and to ensure that students have access to all major new developments. The Computing Service is available to all research students. Information resources and external links: General information about the University provides facts and figures, maps of the campus as well as other information. Academic Registry has information for new international students and a list of useful information which includes semester dates. The Research Student Office deals with many administrative procedures, including admissions, studentships and liaising with the research councils. Other services, such as Audiovisual Services, the Accommodation Service, Sports Facilities and many more can be accessed through the online Prospectus or the Administrative and Service Department listing. At present, information about childcare facilities and religious worship are not available online. The Students' Union runs a registered day nursery with subsidised places for students' children. Facilities for worship include a Muslim prayer room and a chaplaincy. There is a prayer room for 100 students and a separate area for "Wudhu" (washing and cleaning) for both men and women. The Chaplaincy Centre is open daily for worship and group meetings.
