The recognition that we are now in a knowledge economy and society, and that those organisations that will survive and prosper must engender a knowledge culture, has led to an explosion of interest in IKM and of careers requiring expertise and understanding of IKM concepts. This programme enables students to develop a comprehensive set of high-level skills for employment in the public, private and voluntary sectors in the field of IKM, and also in the broader areas of information science and business intelligence.
Academic and professional objectives
The objectives of the programme are to produce
graduates who
1. appreciate the importance of knowledge and knowledge
management in all types of organisations;
2. can demonstrate an understanding of the key
concepts and major issues related to knowledge management systems;
3. are able to explain strategies and technologies
needed for managing knowledge and information within organisations;
4. can explain the principles and techniques of
organising knowledge, including the role of taxonomies and information
retrieval systems;
5. have enhanced practical skills in ICT (information
and communication technologies), building on experience gained in
undergraduate study or during pre-course employment;
6. are competent to pursue careers in an information-intensive
environment in knowledge based organisations.
