The Learning Experience

Civil & Building at Loughborough

With a strong reputation for being at the forefront of technological research and maintaining extensive industrial links, the School of Civil and Building Engineering is well placed to give your career a headstart. Our staff have considerable research and professional experience which ensures our teaching is both up-to-date and relevant to the needs of the construction and transport industries. With our recent £6 Million building expansion and development, your learning experience will be both pleasant and effective.

You will have a personal tutor who will guide you throughout your time at the University, helping you to choose options and providing advice and references. There will be opportunities for you to improve your study skills through workshops. The academic year is divided into two semesters, each comprising eleven teaching weeks followed by a period for revision, examinations and feedback. Semester 1 normally runs from October to January. Semester 2 normally runs from February to June. The summer period is then used to complete the Research Project on full-time courses.

Programme Structure
Most of our MSc programmes are available to study full-time over one year or part-time over two to five years. An MSc is made up of 180 credits, with 120 of these usually being assigned to taught modules and 60 credits being assigned to a research project. Taught modules are usually assessed with coursework and examinations.

Information for International Students
Loughborough has a long tradition of welcoming students from all over the world and the School of Civil and Building Engineering has the largest intake of international postgraduates in our Faculty of Engineering. We recognise and have knowledge of many international qualifications and if required our English Language Study Unit can provide pre-sessional courses. The support network at Loughborough is very comprehensive and all students can feel confident that they will be made welcome and looked after during their stay. There are many national societies in our Students' Union and we have an International Students' Association that provides an active social programme. Our Students' Union also provides a professional Students' Advice Centre with a specialist adviser for international students. Scholarships and Bursaries are also available. Further details can be found at our international website www.lboro.ac.uk/international.

Sponsorship and funding
The University offers a limited number of scholarships and bursaries to UK and EU Students.

For international students, most of the scholarships are made by the British Government to another government, either directly or through an organisation such as the British Council. We would recommend contacting your own Ministry of Education or Education Department, who will have details of most schemes and who will also be able to advise you of your own government's conditions for studying abroad. You could also contact your nearest British Council Office in your own country, who should have details of scholarship schemes and who will also be able to give you information on educational courses and on living in Britain. If there is no British Council Office, then contact the nearest British Embassy or High Commission.

You may also wish to contact the Programme Director of the course you are interested in about further funding opportunities.
