Strategic partnerships
We welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with industry and enjoy mutually beneficial partnerships with hundreds of organisations, ranging from small and medium sized companies to some of the world's largest blue chips.
We value our long-standing links with companies across the public and private sector.
We have many partnerships involving research projects, course attendance or single project collaboration. But a strategic partnership extends beyond this basic customer-supplier relationship to one where the university and a company or organisation undertakes to work together in a sustained and mutually beneficial way: it is strategic because working together helps both partners achieve their business goals. No two partnerships are alike.
SUCCESS STORIES
We enjoy successful partnerships with a number of organisations, including Rolls-Royce, Lotus, JCB, MIRA, PERA leading names in banking, retail and sports, and many more.
BAE Systems
Together with BAE Systems and the East Midlands Development Agency (emda), we have created the Systems Engineering Innovation Centre (SEIC) - a unique national resource for systems engineering with global reach. This £59 million centre enables BAE Systems' engineers and researchers to innovate the design of new products, technologies and whole systems. For BAE Systems, we project manage research consortia and provide an extensive portfolio of short courses and degrees. We are the company's designated Strategic Academic Partner for systems engineering. The SEIC is the culmination of our partnership with the company, and is set to become both a national and international resource.
Ford Motor Company
Ford chose Loughborough University for its £10 million college and largest training facility in Europe. It annually invests over £1 million in teaching and research with us. We provide research and teaching on courses specially designed for their engineers through our Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, and for retail managers in dealerships through our Business School. We are responsible for the academic excellence of the work; Ford ensures its practical relevance.
Rolls-Royce
We are managing a facility for Rolls-Royce to pilot the production of ceramic components for use in fuel cell systems. This marks an important step towards developing affordable fuel cell technology for electricity generation.
WORKING WITH OTHER UNIVERSITIES
Loughborough University also has strategic working relationships with other universities.
The Midlands Energy Consortium, for example, is a three way partnership between Loughborough, Nottingham and Birmingham Universities providing expertise in sustainability through research, teaching and knowledge transfer activities and acting as a host for the Energy Technologies Institute; a £1 billion partnership between the Government and leading global energy companies. The MEC manager, Helen Fletcher, works jointly for all three Universities and is based in the Enterprise Office.
